Tjonnas & Norvald

Tjonnas & Norvald

A mobile ordering app for a local deli and cafe. Designed to reduce wait times and give customers more flexibility.

Problem

Norvald and Tjønnås is a deli and cafe in Gjøvik. Through interviews with employees and customers, we discovered that customers felt frustrated waiting in line, and wanted the ability to order ahead to avoid wasting time in a queue.

Process

Affinity mapping revealed two key insights: customers wanted to order ahead, and students found the prices high. This led to two core features: a pre-order system and a "save the food" option with discounted items nearing expiry. We looked at Foodora and Wolt for inspiration, sketched on paper to map the user journey, and tested with fellow students throughout.

Early sketches had too many steps and screens, so we kept cutting until the flow felt effortless. The most debated decision was the product page. Rather than a single long list, we opted for a recommended tab with category filtering to keep things fast.

Outcome

Fellow students noted that the user journey felt intuitive and easy to follow. The micro-interactions were also highlighted as a standout detail.

In hindsight, establishing a design system earlier would have saved time, as translating the cafe's existing colour palette to meet accessibility standards took longer than expected.
